Tradition and modern architectures styles mix in Barcelona
Although we can find buildings and magnificent examples of human constructions from much earlier periods, architecture in Barcelona is deeply marked by Modernisme. What is Modernisme? An artistic movement developed in Catalunya in the late XIX and early XX century focused on architecture, craftsmanship and traditional arts.
One man, Antoni Gaudí, was the peak artist of this movement. He built (or started to) the Sagrada Familia: a great Basilica currently under construction. A building that follows the tradition of constructing throughout centuries and generations. But Gaudí also designed Casa Milà, Casa Batllò or Park Güell (from where you can admire the whole city).
However, nowadays Barcelona is world-wide known for being a design hub. This will for new aesthetics gives a great importance to modern architecture. It can be found all over the city. Younger generations work hard to find its own way to keep up the centuries-lasting architecture tradition of the Catalan capital.
